What Are Carbon Steel Welded Tubes?

Carbon Steel Welded Tubes are manufactured by forming carbon steel strip into a tubular shape and welding the seam using high-frequency induction welding (ERW / HFIW).

Also known as:

  • MS Welded Tubes
  • CS Welded Pipes
  • ERW Steel Tubes
  • Mild Steel Tubes
  • HFIW Tubes
  • Structural Steel Tubes

Available Shapes

  • Round
  • Square
  • Rectangular
  • Oval / Custom

How Carbon Steel Welded Tubes Are Manufactured (Step-by-Step)

1. Coil Preparation

High-quality HR/CR carbon steel coils are inspected, slitted and edge-trimmed.

2. Forming

Steel strips are passed through roll-formers to create a tubular shape.

3. High-Frequency Induction Welding (ERW / HFIW)

  • No filler metal used
  • Weld strength equal to parent metal
  • Clean and consistent seam quality

4. Weld Bead Removal

External bead removed; internal bead optional based on specification.

5. Heat Treatment (If Required)

Normalising improves grain structure, mechanical strength and weld uniformity.

6. Calibration & Sizing

Achieves tight OD, thickness and shape tolerances.

7. Testing

Hydrostatic and Eddy Current testing ensure weld strength and leak-proof performance.

8. Finishing & Coating

  • Black (mill finish)
  • Varnish coated
  • Painted
  • Hot-dip galvanised (GI)

Carbon Steel Welded Tubes vs Seamless Tubes

Feature Welded (ERW / HFIW) Seamless
Price More economical Much higher
Sizes Excellent for small-to-medium sizes Better for very high pressure
Weld Solid-state seam No seam
Availability Widely available Limited sizes
Applications Structural, general engineering High-pressure lines

70–80% of carbon steel applications use welded tubes due to cost-performance advantage.
