What Are Round Hollow Sections (CHS) & How Are They Manufactured?

Round Hollow Sections (CHS) are circular structural tubes designed for applications where equal load distribution, smooth geometry, and enhanced strength are essential. CHS offers excellent resistance to bending, buckling, and torsion due to its symmetrical shape.

Manufacturing Process (Technical Flow)

The ERW Pipe manufacturing process is fully automated and includes:

  1. Slitting & Coil Preparation High-quality steel coils are slit to the exact width needed for the OD of the CHS.
  2. Forming The strip is progressively shaped through rolls into a circular profile.
  3. ERW / HFIW Welding The edges are heated and fused using high-frequency induction welding. → Produces a strong, invisible weld seam perfectly aligned with the CHS axis.
  4. Sizing & Calibration The pipe is circularized using precision sizing rolls to meet OD and thickness tolerances of IS/EN/ASTM standards.
  5. Non-Destructive Testing Eddy current or ultrasonic testing is performed to ensure joint integrity.
  6. Cutting & End-Finishing Standard lengths (6m / 12m) or custom lengths are cut, with ends supplied plain or bevelled.
  7. Surface Protection Black, oiled, painted, or galvanized finish is applied depending on project requirements. This highly controlled process results in structurally stable CHS suitable for high-load environments.

Key Advantages & Features of CHS

  • Uniform geometry → consistent strength in all directions
  • Superior resistance to compression, torsion & bending
  • Excellent weldability for fabrication
  • Efficient material usage with high strength-to-weight ratio
  • Smooth surface ideal for architectural applications
  • Low maintenance & long service life in outdoor structures
  • Cost-effective compared to equivalent solid steel sections

These advantages make CHS one of the most widely used structural steel products globally.

Key Factors to Consider When Selecting CHS

01.

Structural Load Requirement
Choose higher-yield grades like S355J2H or ASTM A500 Grade C for heavy structures.

02.

Weldability
All CHS grades provide excellent weldability without preheating for most applications.

03.

Thickness & OD Selection
Large ODs and heavier wall thicknesses provide higher moment capacity for longer spans.

04.

Corrosion Environment
Choose GI or painted CHS for outdoor applications and coastal areas.

05.

Compliance with Local Codes
Projects may require EN 10219 (Europe), ASTM A500 (US), or IS 1161 (India) depending on region.

06.

Aesthetic Requirements
CHS provides smooth, visually clean geometry ideal for architectural designs.
