ASTM A789 / A790 Duplex & Super Duplex Welded Tubes

Built for extreme environments: high pressure, high chloride, high corrosion.

Duplex (22% Cr) and Super Duplex (25% Cr) stainless steels are the workhorses of modern offshore, subsea, desalination, chemical and power industries. These materials combine the best of two worlds:

  • Austenitic stainless steel → excellent corrosion resistance
  • Ferritic stainless steel → higher strength, better SCC resistance

Result:

  • 👉 Twice the strength of 304/316
  • 👉 Superior corrosion resistance in seawater & chlorides
  • 👉 High-pressure durability without heavy wall thickness

For engineering teams designing pipelines, risers, manifolds and corrosion-critical components, ASTM A789/A790 duplex tubes offer unmatched dependability.

Table of Contents

What Are Duplex & Super Duplex Welded Tubes?

These are welded stainless-steel tubes manufactured from duplex alloys that contain a balanced austenite–ferrite microstructure. They provide:

  • High mechanical strength
  • Extreme chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance
  • Outstanding pitting resistance (PREN > 40 for Super Duplex)
  • Long service life in aggressive media

Duplex Grades

  • UNS S31803 — 22% Cr, standard duplex
  • UNS S32205 — improved chemistry, higher strength
  • UNS S32304 — lean duplex, cost-effective corrosion resistance

Super Duplex Grades

  • UNS S32750 (2507) — high strength + PREN 42–45
  • UNS S32760 (Zeron 100) — premium alloy with W addition, highest corrosion resistance

These materials outperform 316/317 stainless steel in nearly all severe environments.

Why Duplex / Super Duplex Instead of 316 Stainless Steel?

1. 2X Mechanical Strength
Duplex alloys deliver 2× the yield strength of 316. Meaning:

  • Lower wall thickness
  • Lower weight
  • Lower cost → same pressure rating

2. Extreme Resistance to Chlorides (Seawater, Brine, Desalination)

Alloy PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number)
316L ~25
Duplex 2205 ~35
Super Duplex 2507 >40–45

Higher PREN = higher pitting & crevice corrosion resistance.

3. Excellent SCC (Stress Corrosion Cracking) Resistance
Super Duplex tubes resist stress cracking in:

  • Seawater
  • Chlorinated industrial water
  • High-pressure brine
  • Sour gas (Hâ‚‚S) environments

4. Superior Life-Cycle Cost
Although duplex and super duplex alloys cost more upfront than 316, their lifespan and performance reduce maintenance cost drastically—especially in offshore and chemical plants.

*PREN ≈ %Cr + 3.3×%Mo + 16×%N

Higher PREN = higher pitting & crevice corrosion resistance.

TEMPERATURE & PRESSURE PERFORMANCE (ENGINEERING VIEW)

Duplex & Super Duplex maintain high strength up to approx. 250–315°C (grade-dependent). At low temperatures (down to –46°C or lower), they show excellent impact toughness (after proper heat treatment).

Result for designers:

  • 👉 Thinner wall sections can be used for same pressure rating vs 316L → lower weight + cost.

WELDING, FABRICATION & HEAT TREATMENT

Welding Behaviour

  • Processes: TIG, SAW, Plasma, MIG (controlled), orbital for small OD.
  • Requires controlled heat input to maintain correct austenite–ferrite balance.
  • Use matching / overmatching filler metals:
    • For Duplex 2205 → ER2209
    • For Super Duplex → ER2594 / ER2599

Post-Weld Treatment

  • Solution annealing & rapid quenching (for certain thickness ranges or critical service)
  • Passivation to restore corrosion resistance.

Fabrication

  • Duplex/Super Duplex have higher strength → require higher forming forces.
  • Good machinability with correct tooling & speed control.

TESTING & INSPECTION (PROJECT / EPC GRADE)

Mandatory Standard Tests

  • Hydrostatic Test
