What Are ERW Tubes? (Technical Insight)

ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) Tubes are welded pipes produced by passing high-frequency electrical current through the edges of steel strip, heating the material, and forging the joint without filler metal. This creates a strong, uniform weld that is metallurgically equivalent to the base metal.

ERW tubes are preferred for:

  • Structural engineering
  • Mechanical fabrication
  • Furniture & racks
  • Water lines (low/medium pressure)
  • Scaffolding
  • Solar structure mounting
  • Automotive chassis & cross-members
  • Architectural & decorative applications (SS ERW)

How ERW Tubes Are Manufactured

  1. Slitting & Coil Preparation: Prime HR/CR coils are slit into exact strip widths as per tube size.
  2. Forming the Tube Shape: Rollers gradually form the strip into a round or pre-shaped hollow.
  3. High-Frequency Induction Welding (HFI / HF-ERW): Edges of the strip are heated by electrical resistance and forged together under pressure. ✔ No filler metal ✔ No arc ✔ Strong, consistent weld seam
  4. Bead Removal (Internal/External): Weld bead is removed to maintain smooth flow and high finishing.
  5. Sizing & Calibration: The tube passes through sizing mills to achieve exact OD, WT & shape tolerances.
  6. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Inline eddy current or ultrasonic testing detects any weld or surface inconsistencies.
  7. Cutting, Straightening & Finishing: Tubes are cut into 3m/6m/12m lengths and straightened for perfect alignment.
  8. Finishing: Black ERW, GI coated (IS 1239 Part 1), P&O pickled, Polished SS A554 mirror finish.
